WTN: 1989 Château Léoville Las Cases

  Had with braised short ribs and duck at Marche Moderne, a new French restaurant recently opened by Florent, the former chef at Pinot Provence.
  
  Just a beautiful bottle of wine. Still very dark in color, showing almost no signs of bricking. Definitely at its mature peak; lean, with all the secondary flavors one learns to love in Bdx... cedar, earth...but enough fruit too. Very smooth, with almost no perceptible tannins. A hint of acidity that made it easy to finish the bottle, even though we already had polished off a bottle of NV Moncuit Champagne between the two of us. Sharing a bottle like this on Lorena's birthday with the amazing food that Florent prepares is what wine...and in this case a special Bordeaux.... is all about. (93 pts.)

Already at peak!? And '89, being such a hot vintage as it was, lean? I think we two really need to share a few bottles some time! We seem to have so many similarities in taste, yet so many fundamental differences also. Any chance you could accompany Wade the next time he's here?

Ok, medium lean... not stocky or chunky for sure..

I think it probably won't get any better,.., but it definitely is not over-ripe or anything... leaner than the 98 Musar...if that helps..
