Me.

BTW - We had a couple of nights in Worcester last week.
Worcester is the site of the last battle in the Civil War where Cromwell's Parliamentary Army triumphed on 3 September 1651 and King Charles II fled, first being hidden by my forebears the Penderills in an oak tree before being smuggled to Europe

I've bought a few, too.

That must have been a sizable tree -- to have room for an English king in it!

Me, too. Anything that goes into both Bloody Marys and meat loaf is a consumable that requires regular replacement.

Oak trees grow huge, but it wasn't so big after the restoration of Charles II as hordes came for souvenirs and took bits from the oak till nothing was left. The current oak was grown from an acorn from the original.

BTW - The third most popular name of pubs is The Royal Oak.

BTW (2) After the restoration Charles II paid a pension worth more than a years wages in perpetuity to the Penderel brothers who hid him and their descendants. Unfortunately there was no provision for inflation, so that while the pension is still paid it's worth very little.

My grandmother was a Penderel, but not in line for the pension

I found a very pointed article about this incident in the NYTimes of 1932(!): https://www.nytimes.com/1932/05/29/arch ... =url-share

Regarding famous oak trees, there's one in Connecticut where I grew up. King Charles II had granted an unusual degree of autonomy to Connecticut in a charter issued in 1662. His successor James II decided to exercise more control over the colonies in 1686 by organizing them into the Dominion of New England. The appointed governor of the Dominion stated that his appointment invalidated all of the charters of the constituent colonies. He went to each colony to collect the charters and arrived in Hartford CT in 1687. The Charter of 1662 was hidden in a large oak tree in Hartford and the Dominion governor was given a fake document. The Dominion of New England was dissolved after the 1689 Boston revolt.

That oak tree became known as the Charter Oak and became a symbol of the Colony and later the State of Connecticut. The Charter Oak fell in a storm in 1856, but many scions were grown from its acorns and seedlings.

Thanks for the correction, Jeff. I re-read the message when I first saw your post and several times after that, but I only just now spotted the error. It's so easy to read what you meant to write rather than what you wrote. I've corrected it now.
