Speaking of burns...

What do you use to treat your kitchen/grill burns? I just stick my hand in an ice bucket for a while but I have heard about people using everything from aloe vera to butter on burns. How about you?

One needs to stop the burning first so one minimizes the tissue damage, so (running) cold water is my first line of defense. Then if it's not a serious injury, aloe.

Morphine, followed by amputation. Seriously, I don't burn myself very often at all (maybe once every 1-2 years) -- as a long-time lab researcher, one learns to be very conscious of where one's body is at all times and not to rush when care is required. Of course, I'm not a line cook, either. When I have burned myself: ice or cold running water, followed by aloe.

The best to use for burns is:

Silver Sulfadiazine cream 1%..... this is used for burns of all types specifically radiation burns.

Back when I worked in restaurants, I was taught to get ice on a burn as quickly as possible. This seems to work pretty well for the kinds of burns I get while cooking, which have never been very large and have always been first- or second-degree. It also seems that the quicker the ice gets to it the better.

Cold running water, then Diprosone OV (cortisone). The dermatologist told me it's the best thing, and I find it works a treat.

Ice or water to cool the burn immediately. Perhaps aloe afterwards if I have any.

Never, ever use butter; it holds in the heat and causes more damage.

Aloe vera... I always have a plant near or in the kitchen.
