Maryland soft shell blue crabs

by Thomas » Sat Jun 06, 2015 10:41 am

I am having a melt down. For the second consecutive year, soft shell blue crabs are not making their way to the Finger Lakes market at Wegmans. I am told it's because of a new supplier who cannot guarantee that the crabs will arrive still alive, and so Wegmans is not buying them.

Yes, they need to be alive when you buy them, but two years without them is a hard compromise. I might take a drive 300 miles to NY City just to eat soft shell crabs.

Can you find a NYC retailer who will ice and ship to you?

I doubt I'd know where to begin--been away from the city too long--unless you are volunteering, Jeff...

I managed to find soft shells at a local restaurant, but they used so much butter I couldn't taste the crabs.

Well, no. The good store in my neighborhood is way expensive. But Google knows something about it:

http://www.lintonseafood.com/maryland_s ... bs_s/2.htm
http://www.crabplace.com/softcrabs.asp
http://www.bluecrabtrading.com/soft-shell-crabs.html

And I didn't even try hard. :D

Thanks, Jeff. I never thought to put Google and blue crabs together, but I can't imagine why not.

Now, I am wondering how much this is going to set me back!
