Choco-chip cookies: Pecans, walnuts or other?

by Robin Garr » Mon Mar 28, 2016 12:10 pm

I got a lot of activity on this question on Facebook and realized I should have posed it to the serious cooks and foodies here: What's your pleasure regarding nuts in chocolate-chip cookies: Walnuts, pecans, none or other?

I'll hold off on my opinion until later, but I do have a strong, evidence-based preference. ;)

Walnuts all day. Pecans are too sweet.

No further questions at this time.

Actually, I would have said walnuts, because they're standard, and I think nuts improve choco-chip cookies. But the other day Mary was making a batch and mentioned the pecan option. It sounded good, so we tried it, and I think they're better. Pecans and brown sugar have a natural affinity, and together they kicked the cookies up a notch. (I don't find pecans any "sweeter" than walnuts, personally, and wouldn't really have defined either as a sweet taste, but that's just me.)
