Hot chocolate food of the gods

by Larry Greenly » Mon Feb 19, 2007 11:30 am

Here's an interesting hot chocolate mix made in Taos, NM, called Xocoatl Mayan Hot Chocolate Mix. It has ground chocolate, cocoa, lots of spices, including red chile, raw honey and sugar. Close to what the Mayans drank, but a bit sweeter.

There is a new place in Santa Fe called Kakawa Chocolates. The owner, Mark Sciscenti, is a really nice guy and has a selection of what he calls Elixirs, or Drinking Chocolate. Bittersweet and extremely flavorful. (He also has tons of truly decadent chocolate candy.)

If you stop by the shop he will let you taste the various kinds, then you can either purchase a full serving of the one you like best, or purchase the wafer to take home. My favorite is the Pepper Allspice. Everyone knowing how much I like it, I was given a gift of it for Valentine's Day.

A little pricey per ounce, but as a treat....

I can no longer bring myself to drink regular hot chocolate. Just like I can't drink a wine cooler..... 8)
