You know the 1 in 12 rule? Well, how about 5 out of 6? And poblanos, no less, needed for tomorrow. Emergency store run required. F word!!!!!

Has Instacart arrived in your area? I love it... Someone else shops, and I stay at home to get other chores done.

Yes but that wouldn't have solved my problem. I needed not just more chiles, but the right chiles and an Instacart shopper wouldn't have the ability to judge my issue. I had to choose markets that weren't in the same distribution channel as the Haggen I bought the excessively hot ones at (rules out Safeway) and even then we have no way of knowing if they came from the same central source even if under different supplier contracts. So I went to Whole Foods first and their's were the same small size (smallest I've ever seen, all these) as the Haggen chiles. I bought three anyway, but then went to Fred Meyer which is a Kroger store, and guess what--same super small size. I bought some there, too and thinking myself out of options I turned around and went home. Got to Ferndale and thought "Grocery Outlet?" Okay, can't hurt to try, and there I found gorgeous big perfect chiles at a far better price.

Size indicates two things: different source, and thicker-walled fruit. Thicker walled fruit means the chile stays bright emerald green even after charring, and I want that color. The smaller ones got a little brownish.

That shopping trip took three hours out of a busy day that didn't have an extra three hours in it. But it's all done now, and today's Terrine Day at Bill's!!!!!

Yesterday I was picking the chillies that turned red from my pots.

I like bush chillies because they grow in a pot and don't need staking. Fresh chillies freeze very well; I'll eat my crop over the coming year.
