'Hoe Cake'

by Bill Spohn » Sat Oct 18, 2025 7:50 pm

I was on a site that discusses American country cooking and they were talking about hoe cake, which are named after cakes of corn bread that was made in the back of a hoe blade in the fields where field workers were (or at least that is one story) and supposedly derived from a native American dish.

In any case the site had people trading recipes and one individual posted "Were these made by prostitutes, and if so, why?", obviously under the impression that they were 'whore cakes'. Exit laughing!

I've heard of hoe cakes but had no idea that this was a field prep and actually (originally) made on hoes. So clever!
