Gas prices, etc.

by Larry Greenly » Wed Mar 25, 2026 5:55 pm

I bought gas at Costco today for $3.48/gal. Several weeks ago it was $2.29/gal.

Had a light lunch at Costco by sampling off their food carts. Due to Easter, they had extra carts. Asked the yogurt cart gal if her brand had active cultures. She had no idea what I was talking about.

Then I bought a few items at Smith's, including a prime sirloin the checker failed to ring up. And on the way out, I found a dime. It drives Edie bonkers how much money I'm always finding. (The most was $20 in fives spaced along a walkway like bread crumbs in Hansel and Gretel.)

I had a good evening finding money on Saturday. I found a US $5 bill on the ground, and at my bank, just lying on a table, was a $5 issued by the East Caribbean Bank, serving the large cluster of Caribbean islands. Very pretty bill.

You know what's fun right now? Living in California and driving a car that requires premium fuel. If you really try, you can find it here in Sacramento for $5.99/gallon. It mostly runs from $6.29 - $6.99, though.

You know what's fun right now? Driving an electric vehicle that I charge off our solar panels. I bought it to avoid putting more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Watching the catastrophic rise in gas prices as a dispassionate observer (not quite, I'm outraged by the unbridled idiocy of what's going on right now) is an unanticipated benefit.

Dear Leader Trump called solar energy a parasite on our electrical grid. Well, at least it doesn't cause cancer or kill baby whales. Doesn't that make you happy?

Is this the place to mention our new EV charging system in the garage?

Impressive, although more likely when you're going to the source at the bank!

In the past few months, I've found a $1 bill and a $5 bill on the ground, which hasn't happened in many many years, and I was remarking how kids today miss that pleasure, because everyone uses digital payment instead of cash. When I was a kid, it was much more of a thing to hunt for lost cash.

My best was a $100 bill I found on a sidewalk next to a fairly busy street here a couple of years ago. I figured that it had to be a counterfeit but there was a bank just up the street, so I took it in and it was confirmed to be the real thing. I felt bad for whoever lost it but there was no one nearby when I picked it up. On the opposite end of this, my wife and I will still pick up pennies that we find on the street.
