Finally, some good food in London!

by Stuart Yaniger » Thu Mar 29, 2007 10:18 am

After some pretty unhappy experiences with some highly-recommended places, we really scored a few nights ago. Tayyab is everything it's reputed to be and more. Thank god, no more generic sweet, greasy, and flavorless curries. The ingredients were fresh, handled with respect, and spiced carefully and appropriately. The downside is that you must start eating early, else a table will be impossible to get. BYOB. And again, thank god for that- one of our group brought a very nice old Madeira, the first 18th century wine I've ever tried.

Highly recommended.

Yabbut you're not a carnivore ... is there a good place for meat-eaters?

Judging from some of the very nice-looking things I saw at the Borough Market today (I dropped 60 quid there, ouch!), I'd guess yes as long as you don't allow a British chef within 100 meters.

The others with me at Tayyab were all carnivores and were as delighted with the meaty things as I was with the veggies and cheese. BTW, I had the single best okra dish in my life there.

Now you're talking. Being from Okrahoma, it is a staple. You can't have a good gumbo without lots of okra.

For the meateaters, go to Motcombs. Great food, service and wine list. You cannot go wrong. It was recommended to me by my sister and I am pleased to pass it along. It's in London, easy to get to.

Sounds great, Stuart!

So spill the beans--tell us more about this 18th century Madiera.
