Wine Stories

by george.manvelishvili » Wed Jun 03, 2015 5:36 am

Hello, Wine Lovers!

I know how you guys love interesting wines. But except tasting a wine there also can be a story behind it. Today I wanted to share a short one with you. You are for sure welcome to tell also your stories in comments.
It's my first post here, so don't punch me hard :)

High up in the mountains, in one little but ancient country there is a small winery called Hin Areni. Vineyards are situated at an elevation of 1215-1250 meters above the sea level and its wines are made from indigenous grape varieties coming from centuries: Areni and Voskehat. I'm pretty sure you've never heard about them before.

Why these grape varieties are so notable? They say grape stems and seeds for Areni and Voskehat were found by archeologists in 2007, they have been tested and the results showed that the grapes seeds date back to 6,200 years. Impressive, isn't it? Today seeds became a 32 hectares winery producing some unique wines and I bet you didn't have occasion to try these ones - only if you lived more than 60 centuries ago.

I didn't taste them either, but I definitely would love to feel the taste of these wines. It's like drinking history.

Oh yes, this little country is Armenia. Here is the Hin Areni winery profile http://winespotter.net/company/hin-areni- - you can find more details there and maybe contact them if you interested.

It would be awesome if you share some other stories about wines you know.

Welcome, George. Nice story! Thanks for sharing it. We once had an Armenian restaurant in my town. a great place, but they did not offer Armenian wines.
