WTN: The importance of drinking Ernest

by Jenise » Thu Apr 20, 2017 4:26 pm

2014 Ernest Meurgey-Perron Viré-Clessé Vieilles Vignes
Medium yellow. Effusive nose, unmistakably chardonnay. On the palate, generous notes of apple, lemon curd, limestone chalky mineral and honey with an unusual and attractive white pepper thing on the finish that ensures you remember you're drinking Burgundy. A steal at just $17 from a flash site. Excited to have nine more.

Hmm...white pepper always puts me in the mind of Gruner Veltliner.

Agreed! And some white Crozes Hermitages I've had. Very quirky on a white burg, without it being a quirky wine at all.

So then I am not sure I understand: "with an unusual and attractive white pepper thing on the finish that ensures you remember you're drinking Burgundy"

You're right to call me out on that. I said it badly, but what I meant was that no way would you mistake this for a California or other new world chardonnay. It may be the Raquel Welch of white Burgundies, but it's too layered and complex to be anything but white Burgundy.
