SFChron: Esther on Monastrell/Graciano ScrewUp in Paso

Very nicely done article be Esther in today's SFChron:

Sorta like the FPS screwup of Refosco/Mobdeuse identification...maybe the screwup is not so bad in the end. The good thing is that we'll be seeing more Graciano wines..which is maybe not such a bad thing afterall.

thanks for posting, Tom; I'm glad to see there's someone else using Graciano with Tempranillo in a similar way. It's such a lovely grape.

Preston Family ordered what they thought were Grenache. Turned out to be Grenache Blanc. They labeled the wine "We'll Never Do That Again".

Graciano can make a lovely wine. In Rioja we visited Bodegas Casa Primicia who had single variety bottlings of four grapes used in the ed Rioja blend. I could carry ony one bottle home and I chose the Graciano.

I've had some nice Gracianos from Rioja, where its acreage is increasing. It has a reputation as being hard to grow and there is a claim, maybe apocryphal, that the name comes from the growers saying Gracias, no!

Never had a Mobdeuse! Would seem to be the perfect wine for the Gang of Pour.

The Lagier-Meredith Mondeuse is world-class, David. Mondeuse typically shows a lot of herbal/rosemary/
thyme/pungent character. The L-M has that in spades w/o the earthy/rustic character that many from the Savoie have.
It's a grape they should be planting all up&down the Coast of Calif.
